Rusland toont zich dezer dagen weer als een beer met scherpe klauwen. Of probeert dit althans, want achter dit stoere imago liggen ook heel wat fundamentele economische en politieke zwaktes weggemoffeld. Velen van ons zien Ruslands toekomst (weer) als een sterke, moeilijke beer/buur. Onze voorbereidingen op dit scenario zijn volop aan de gang: hogere defensie-uitgaven; allerlei verzekeringsmaatregelen binnen de NAVO; een koelere opstelling van de EU. Maar hoe waarschijnlijk is die toekomst eigenlijk? Stephan zal een aantal alternatieve toekomsten schetsen voor Rusland en wat die betekenen voor Europa.

Germany, Eastern Europe, Russia, Turkey, Iran and China are increasingly looking to the East for inspiration. Though the strong economic dynamic in the region has yet to be widely acknowledged. Across the endless plains between Germany and China, a new silk road is coming into being: one that consists of Internet cables and railroad tracks. Do these new transport and migration routes to the East mean we are moving towards a new world order? What does this mean for the current, US-led, world order? Will Donald Trump's recent election win mean the end of American leadership and the rise of China?

You see, we live in the EU and these days, according to the Press Freedom Index, the EU member states Italy and Greece rank well below Mongolia, Papua New Guinea, Senegal and Madagascar. And it’s getting worse. Could it be that, while western leaders look more to the east, they become willing to bargain over one of the main pillars under our democracy, independent media? How do media work? When do they decide what to publish and when to back off? How powerful are they or should we ask how vulnerable they are?

It sounds as the cartoons of Asterix the Gaul fighting the Roman Empire: one small communist country continues to resist the superiority of the world's superpower. That's at least how North Korea presents itself. Nuclear weapons, big parades and hysteric propaganda ensure that the whole world knows the name and haircut of its leader. In the meantime the regime brutally suppresses its population and earns its money through its State Office for international organized crime. It laughs at any international law or norm and threatens friends and foes alike. Why is nobody stopping this rogue regime?
