Dr. Jan Pieter van der Schaar is an associate professor in theoretical physics at the University of Amsterdam and coordinator of the Delta-Institute for Theoretical Physics (D-ITP), a joined research initiative of the theoretical physics institutes in Amsterdam, Utrecht and Leiden. His research focuses on string theory and cosmology. He was the former Head of Studies Sciences at Amsterdam University College and still continues to teach there. Van der Schaar obtained his bachelor degree in Physics and Astronomy and his master degree in Theoretical Physics from the University of Groningen. He also received his PhD on "String Theory Limits and Dualities" from the University of Groningen, and was a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Michigan, CERN and Columbia University in New York.
