A deep dive into the Movies

Inhoud

Are filmmakers intentionally influencing our political views or are they just trying to make us aware of the political debate? Fantastic tales, whether they are ancient fairytales or the latest dystopian sciencefiction movies, are rarely free from ideological backgrounds and underlying (ethical) values. To add to that, the socio-cultural backgrounds represented by the film industry are increasingly diversified. How does film shape our world view? And how does that affect the public opinion?

Wed 3 October 2018 20:15 - 21:30

In recent years we have seen a shift, in which the straight white man is no longer the central figure in Hollywood films. From Wonder Woman and The Hunger Games to Black Panther and Get Out: more and more we see a more diverse world view on the white screen. What are the reasons for major film and TV productions to reflect this diversity on a broader scale? Why does everyone ultimately have an interest in a more diverse world view? And what does this tell us about the complex interplay between politics, ideology, and entertainment in the 21st century?

During the Second World War, film was seen as a perfect means of persuasion: the Nazi’s, the Sovjets, and the Americans all had notorious film industries that propagated their political and ideological systems. Today, national governments have much less control over the content of film productions. Still, the entertainment industry seems to convey political messages. What incentives are at play, and can we call that propaganda? Are we still receptive for disinformation in the era of ‘Fake News’ and ‘Filter Bubbles’? And: what does ‘politically correct’ really mean?
