The North Pole is owned by no state, but times are changing. The reduction of Arctic ice due to climate change makes the exploitation of natural resources possible. Experts estimate the oil and gas resources under the ice are worth 60 billion dollars. Russia, the US, Canada, Denmark (Greenland) and Norway all claim 'their' part of the North Pole as the geopolitical significance of the region is growing. Is it up to the United Nations to decide who wins the battle?

The energy transition is underway: more energy, less carbon is needed for a world with a growing population and rising standard of living. Both a ‘top down’ and ‘bottom up’ approach is required: the big systems and industries vis-à-vis local and households. In Shell we have reflected both in the 2050 scenarios ‘Mountains’ and ‘Oceans’. Scenarios are by no means predictions or preferences – they just provide a background for our conversation.

Sommige militairen gaan uit van technologisch determinisme: het geloof dat met nog meer geavanceerde technologie de volgende oorlog kan worden gewonnen. In enkele gevallen geeft militaire technologie inderdaad de doorslag in de strijd; in andere gevallen werkt het eerder averechts. De inzet van drones en 'killer robots' is omstreden. Wordt oorlog een groot computerspel nu militairen deze machines op afstand besturen? Weegt het verlaagde risico voor militairen op tegen het verhoogde risico op burgerslachtoffers, onder het mom van 'collatoral damage'? Christ Klep geeft zijn visie op een van de belangrijkste vraagstukken voor de toekomst van de krijgsmacht en van oorlog in het algemeen!

Since the financial crisis the global economy seems to have shifted into a lower gear. The American economy keeps on disappointing, Europe’s economy hardly moves at all, Russia and Brasil are in deep recession and even China cannot drive the global economy forward. Meanwhile, unemployment rates remain high, productivity hardly improves and robots are chasing after our jobs. Those who follow the news daily are bound to become pessimists. But how bad is the global economy really doing? A lecture on debt, the aging population and deflation, but also about the underlying economic force and about why the pessimists are wrong in the end.
